Word Count Limits - LitMag (print): 15,000 words; Litmag Online: 4,000 words
What We Pay - LitMag Print: Upon acceptance, we pay $1,000 for fiction and nonfiction; $250 for poetry (or the rare short short). LitMag Online: Upon acceptance, we pay $250 LitMag acquires First North American Serial Rights. Copyright reverts to the author upon publication.

When We Are Open for Submissions - we have a new staggered schedule that best allow us to consider submissions in all categories:

Poetry is open:  9/1/18 to 11/30/18; 2/1/19 to 5/31/19
Nonfiction is open: 9/1/18 to 11/30/18; 1/1/19 to 5/31/19
LitMag Online is open: 9/1/18 to 11/30/18; 2/1/19 to 5/31/19

General Guidelines
Please submit only once in each category and wait until you receive our response before submitting again. We accept simultaneous submissions, but please withdraw your submission immediately via Submittable. if another publication beats us to your work. We try to respond to submissions within two months, but please understand that the volume of submissions may require us to take longer.

LitMag’s Anton Chekhov Award for Flash Fiction 

First Prize: $1,250, publication in LitMag and agency review by Sobel Weber Associates (clients include: Viet Thanh Nguyen, Richard Russo, Laura Lee Smith).

Finalists: Three finalists will receive $100 each.

All finalists will be considered for possible agency review. All entries will be considered for publication.

Deadline: October 1, 2019.

Contest Fee: $16

Submission Guidelines: Entries must be short stories between 500 and 1,5000 words. Please use 12pt type, preferably Times New Roman, and submit your short story as either a Word doc or a PDF. Only previously unpublished short stories are eligible. Writers may submit multiple stories, each of which requires a separate submission. Submissions through Submittable only.  Notification: The contest will be judged by the editors of the magazine. The winning short stories and finalists will be announced publicly on our Web site and social media as well as by email to all contestants in January of 2020.
